Introduction: Nipple sore is one of the common problem which breastfeeding women experience during the first days after delivery and its main cause is incorrect positioning and attachment of the baby to the breast. Therefore, this study was performed with the aim to evaluate the effect of breastfeeding technique modification on prevention of nipple sore.
Methods: This clinical trial was performed on 70 primiparous women who had delivered at Omolbanin and 17 Shahrivar hospitals of Mashhad in 2010. The subjects were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The mothers in the experimental group were trained for correct position of breastfeeding and baby attachment to the beast during the first 2 hours after delivery, and training booklet was given to them, the women in control group received ward's routine care. Data collection tools included the form of interview, examination and observation, the list of checking the breastfeeding position and Storr nipple pain scale. Data was analyzed by SPSS software (version 11.5) and Chi-square, Fisher, Mann-Whitney, independent-t, paired t, ANOVA, and logistic regression. PResults: Mean score of was significantly lower in experimental group than control group (P<0.001) that by controlling the interventional variables, there was not a significant relationship between nipple sore and score of breastfeeding.
Conclusion: Face to face training of correct position of breastfeeding and baby attachment to the beast during the first 2 hours after delivery decreases the pain, sensitivity, and nipple sore.
