Title: Active memory performance, at the time of premenstrual syndrome in medical students
Objective: Premenstrual syndrome is an unpleasant mood disorder that may affect performance, personal life, and cause stress in social relationships.
Material and Methods: In a cross-sectional descriptive study, 72 medical students of Hamedan University of Medical Sciences were selected by available sampling method. Participants were evaluated in terms of age, marital status, severity of premenstrual syndrome and active memory performance by self-report method. The data were analyzed with SPSS software version 26 at a confidence level of 95%.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of the participants' age was 26.61±2.01 years,
54.2% were single. In terms of the severity of premenstrual syndrome,
5.6% was mild, 45.8% was moderate, and 48.6% was severe. The mean and standard deviation
of processing memory score, accumulation and active memory performance were 15.97±3.45,
16.29±4.01 and 59.73±13.25, respectively. Significant relationship was observed between the
severity of premenstrual syndrome with younger age (p=0.001), lower score of memory in
processing area (p<0.001), accumulation (p<0.001) and overall (p<0.001); However, no
significant relationship was observed between premenstrual syndrome severity, with marital status.
Conclusion: Premenstrual syndrome is a mood disorder in medical
students. Which reduces their active memory performance, active memory processing and
active memory accumulation. It seems that the severity of premenstrual syndrome decreases
with increasing age, but it was not related to marital status.
