Introduction: Premenstrual syndrome is one of the most common problems of women that may lead to decrease of academic and job performances and impairment of interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is essential to use some interventions to resolve this problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Group Cognitive-behavioral/narrative therapy of premenstrual syndrome of female students of Shahid Chamran University in Ahvaz.
Methods: This experimental field research with pretest and post test was done on 40 female students living in dormitories with the mean age of 23 years (±3.25). They were selected randomly among 73 volunteer female university-students with premenstrual syndrome who were eligible for inclusion. The participants were placed randomly in control and case groups. Two groups completed demographic questionnaire and Daily Rating Severity of problems in pre-test. Case group participated in ten sessions of 90-minute of group therapy per week. Then, Post test and follow up were taken from both groups. Obtained data were statistically analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance. P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The result of covariance analysis showed that Group Cognitive-behavioral/narrative therapy has decreased total scores of premenstrual symptoms (p<0/001) and its subscales (p<0/001) in the case group compared to the control group in post-test and follow up stage.
Conclusion: Group Cognitive-behavioral/narrative therapy has an effective role in decrease of premenstrual syndrome.
