Introduction: Kangaroo mother care method is a standardized care based on protocol that its basis is skin t skin contact between baby and mother, and its aim is to empower the mother to gradually gain the skills and responsibility to care of baby child and empowers the mother to cope with the physical and emotional needs of the child. This study was performed aimed to evaluate the effect of kangaroo mother care on postpartum maternal general health status.
Methods: This randomized clinical trial study was conducted on 100 postpartum women in Ahvaz Imam Khomeini hospital at 2014. Participants were divided into two groups, Kangaroo mother care and routine care of baby and were followed up to 2 months after delivery to assess the general health status. Data collection tools were demographic questionnaire, and Goldenberg general health questionnaire. Data was analyzed by SPSS software (version 19) and independent t-test, chi-square test, and one-way ANOVA test. PResults: According to the results of the sub-scales of Goldenberg General Health Questionnaire before the study in intervention group, most disorder was related to social function (98%) and lowest disorder was related to depression (44%) and items of general health score had been improved in the assessment of first week, first month, and second month after the intervention. Most and lowest disorder related to the results of total score of general health in the intervention group, before the intervention was 98%, and in the first and second month after the intervention was 0%.
Conclusion: Skin to skin contact for mother and newborn is effective for improved items of general health) physical health, anxiety, social functioning, depression). Therefore, with regard to the usefulness and no costs of this method, it is recommended for promotion of maternal health and considering other benefits, it is recommended to perform it after delivery.
