Background and Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in reproductive-age women and an important cause of ovulatory dysfunction and infertility. Conventional treatments, including ovulation-induction medications, may have limitations related to cost and adverse effects, prompting interest in complementary approaches. Persian medicine (PM) approaches to PCOS may include lifestyle modification, herbal and compound medicines, and manual interventions. This report describes a pregnancy in a woman with PCOS following Persian medicine interventions.
Case Report: A 28-year-old woman with an 18-month history of attempting to conceive and a diagnosis of PCOS presented to a Persian medicine clinic on 20/7/1403. Her symptoms included submental hirsutism, acne, delayed spotting at menstruation onset, pre- and postmenstrual spotting, menstrual pain, bloating, and acid regurgitation. Ultrasonography showed a 12-mL right ovary with multiple small follicles; the left ovary was normal in size and shape. Management included dietary and lifestyle modification, adjustment of sleep timing, Persian herbal and compound medicines, and manual interventions, including submental wet cupping and cupping over the uterine and ovarian region. Gastrointestinal symptoms and spotting improved during follow-up. After approximately eight months, a pregnancy test was positive on 8/4/1404. Subsequent ultrasonography confirmed a live intrauterine fetus with a regular heartbeat.
Discussion and Conclusion: This case documents pregnancy following Persian medicine interventions in a woman with PCOS. However, a single case cannot establish causality or treatment efficacy. Larger controlled studies are needed.
