Introduction: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, comprising over 100 characterized types. Infections are mostly asymptomatic and commonly self-resolving; however, in persistent infections by high-risk types, HPV is a well-recognized cause for representative cancers, including cervical, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal. Hence, this diploma attempts to present an overview to HPV in detail.
Methods: This booklet tried to present current knowledge about HPV. It elaborated on virology, ways of transmission (mainly skin-to-skin sexual contact), and clinical manifestations (from genital warts to dysplasia). It gave guidelines on screening, differing for males and females, placing great emphasis on females undergoing routine Pap smear and/or HPV-DNA testing. Prevention is also covered in regard to the vaccination regime and recommendations for safe sex. Methods of treatment for warts and precancerous lesions are given.
Results: Some of the key facts will be: Almost 80% of women are HPV-infected at least once in a lifetime. Those HPV subtypes that are high-risk are responsible for over 90% of anal and 60% of penile cancers. Vaccines are very efficient in preventing the subtypes covered, especially in cases where vaccination took place before exposure; hence, it should be given to boys before becoming sexually active and to girls simultaneously.
Conclusion: The term "booklet" here applies to a practical didactic application designed to disseminate information regarding HPV. Such applications work best, more so for young people, as they take intricate medical knowledge and morph it into something handy. By helping humanize this virus and turning toward awareness, such tools need to be supported to drive vaccination, early screening, and healthy behaviors. These education interventions verify that the public health stock remedy is geared towards lessening the rates and impact of HPV-related conditions.
