Introduction: Pelvic mass is common in women of all age groups, and it is necessary to diagnose the cause of pelvic mass before determining the appropriate treatment plan. A physical examination alone is not reliable. Imaging tools play a key role in diagnosing the type, size, and other characteristics of a mass. MRI appears to have greater potential in diagnosing masses compared to ultrasound and CT scans.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018-2020 at Ghaem Center of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Patients' demographic data were extracted from the records and the results of ultrasound and MRI were compared with pathological findings (as the diagnostic gold standard). Data were analyzed by SPSS software and sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value indices were calculated.
Results: The study enrolled 62 patients (mean age 37.5±14.2 years). The sensitivity and specificity of MRI were 93.3% and 87.2%, respectively, while these values were 60% and 60% for abdominal ultrasound. MRI's positive and negative predictive value for malignant masses was 70% and 97.6%, respectively. Kappa Accord Coefficient for MRI and Abdominal Ultrasonography This agreement between the two methods is not statistically significant for the diagnosis of the type of mass.
Conclusion: MRI is an accurate and reliable tool for diagnosing pelvic masses and can prevent unnecessary surgeries. Also, MRI helps in choosing the type of surgery and treatment measures.
