Background and purpose: Premenstrual syndrome is a set of uncomfortable symptoms that can disrupt women's daily activities and cause many problems. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of aromatherapy with rosemary, lavender and spring orange essential oils on the severity of symptoms of this syndrome in women.
Methods: This randomized and single-blind clinical trial was conducted on 128 married women of reproductive age with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome in Gonabad comprehensive health service centers. The participants were randomly divided into four groups of 32 people. The intervention groups were treated with 30% herbal essential oils, and aromatherapy was performed for two monthly cycles, from one week before menstruation to 4 days after the onset of menstruation, twice a day for 5 minutes. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS26 software and the significance level was P<0.05.
Findings: The effectiveness of lavender in reducing all premenstrual symptoms was greater than that of jasmine and spring orange. Aromatherapy significantly reduced mood, physical and social symptoms in all groups (p<.05). Also, aromatherapy significantly reduced psychological and behavioral symptoms in the rose and lavender groups (p<.05). No significant difference was observed in the control group.
Conclusion: Although lavender had a greater effect in reducing premenstrual symptoms, in general, aromatherapy with all three essential oils has positive effects on mood, mental and physical symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.
