extensive studies have been done on the effect of probiotics on the control and treatment of UTIs.This study explore the effect of probiotics on UTIs in postmenopausal women.
In order to find the relevant papers which are clinical trial,(international Web of Science، Embase، Scopus،Google Scholar, PubMed) and national (Irandoc، Magiran، SID، IranMedex) databases with different combinations of keywords related to (Urinary tract infection) and (Probiotic) obtained from MeSH were investigated with no time constraint. Selection of papers was done based on inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as quality assessment of papers using Verhagen scale. In order to preserve all valuable data, no time constraint was considered and all relevant papers published until 30 June 2022 were evaluated.
five final papers with the total sample size of 419 subjects were investigated. The articles were RCT type. l. The findings indicated that use of probiotics does not have much effect on prevention from UTIs in post-menopausal women. However, lactobacilli can be used as probiotic agents in prevention from UTIs in these people.
Differences in the amount and number of daily consumption as well as type and number of probiotic strains used have led to different results; nevertheless, probiotics do not seem to have a preventive role in incidence of post-menopausal women UTIs. However, probiotics can be used alongside other antibiotic compounds to support UTI treatment. In this regard, conducting extensive studies to explore the role of probiotics on post-menopausal women’s UTI is suggested.
