Abstract
Introduction: Adopting a safe method to accelerate labor can reduce maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. Prolonged labor, perineal rupture and episiotomy can be associated with short-term and long-term maternal and fetal complications. The effect of vaginal and perineal lubrication with natural animal fat on the length of the second stage of labor, the frequency of episiotomy and perineal rupture in nulliparous women.
Methods: The present study is a randomized clinical trial that was performed on nulliparous women aged 18-35 years, with singleton pregnancy, gestational age 37-42 weeks and cephalic presentation. The control group and 43 people in each group were divided. During the second stage of labor, a gentle massage was performed with two index and middle fingers impregnated with duck tallow oil (for the animal fat group) or lubricant gel (for the gel group). Massage without lubricant was performed for the control group.
Results: The mean length of the second stage of labor in the animal fat group was significantly lower than the other two groups (P = 0.01). There was no significant difference between the studied groups in terms of perineal tears and the frequency of episiotomy (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Perineal and vaginal massage using animal fat lubricant in the second stage of labor can shorten the length of the second stage of labor.
