Introduction: One of the problems during delivery is cervical edema in first labor stage, but there is rare preventive and treatment information about it in valid scientific texts. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of drug and non-drug treatment methods on duration of cervical edema during labor.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 80 pregnant women with cervix edema in first stage of labor who were hospitalized in maternity ward of Hasheminejad and Omolbanin hospitals, Mashhad, Iran during July 2011 to July 2012. Sampling was convenient. Women were divided into three groups regarding to their treatment methods; two groups of common therapeutic methods (Pethidine-Atropin) and non-drug group (position and breath techniques). Data were collected using a demographic and obstetrics questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 16, Pearson, Mann Whitney, chi-square and Fisher tests. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: There are no significant differences between two groups regarding age, gravidity, parity, uterus contraction (frequency and duration) before and after treatment. But duration of cervical edema was significantly lower in non-drug group than other group (p=0.046).
Conclusion: Non-drug treatment was a proper method for management of cervical edema because of its faster recovery and safety.
