Introduction: Cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women can lead to inflammation of the placenta or amniotic membrane, infection of the fetus, and ultimately miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth. The aim of this study is to explain cytomegalovirus infection and its effects on the health of fetuses and newborns. Also, this article tries to clearly outline the aspects of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus.
Materials and methods: The study was started by searching scientific databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar ISI and using the keywords Cytomegalovirus, Pregnant Women, Newborn, Health Care System. English research articles whose topic is cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women and infants from 2000 to 2023 were selected.
Findings: In the present study, it was found that cytomegalovirus infection can cause abortion, premature birth, intrauterine growth restriction, stillbirth, neonatal death secondary to pneumonia and congenital hydrocephalus, and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) among the effects of this infection on the fetus. and become babies. But this infection did not have many effects on the mothers.
Conclusion: It was found that despite the fact that congenital CMV infection has serious consequences and is very common in scientific reports, pregnant women generally have little or no knowledge of this disease. Therefore, it is recommended to develop a protocol to reduce the vertical transmission of infection in endemic areas for the use of respectable doctors and nurses.
