Background:Severe pain not only lead to stress and physiological complications makes the labor, but can also experience unpleasant for the mother. Also, severity of labor pain can indirectly affect the newborn Apgar score. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of aromatherapy with citrus aurantium essential oil and auriculotherapy on labor pain in primiparous women and the newborn Apgar score.
Methods:This randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted with 138primiparous women in2024 in Yazd, Iran. Participants were divided into three groups of ear acupressure, aromatherapy, and control. Aromatherapy with citrus aurantium essential oil and ear acupressure were administered in the active stage of labor for the two intervention groups. Labor pain intensity was assessed before and three times after the intervention with a visual analogue scale. Apgar scores were calculated at the first and fifth minutes after birth using the Apgar table. The results were analyzed using SPSS 26 statistical software .
Finding:In the present study Aromatherapy and ear acupressure significantly reduced the labor pain intensity score compared to the control group(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the three groups of ear acupressure, aromatherapy, and control of the first and fifth minute apgar scores of the newborn(p<0.05).
Conclusion:This study highlights the potential of aromatherapy and ear acupressure for managing the severity of labor pain. Furthermore, none of the interventions had a negative impact on the apgar score of neonates. Consequently, these approaches can be recommended as alternative non-pharmacological choices for reducing labor pain and enhancing the overall childbirth experience.
