Background: Gynecologic laparoscopy is one of specialized procedures, performed for different purposes, including diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Here, we evaluated the overall status of gynecologic laparoscopy in Iran by asking the physicians performing it around the country.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional survey, gynecologists who performed laparoscopic surgery in Iran were included. The designed questionnaire comprised 12 questions regarding participants' training backgrounds, current practice locations, perceived adequacy of available laparoscopic equipment, types, and frequency of laparoscopic surgeries performed in the preceding three months. Questionnaires were distributed electronically via email or WhatsApp groups, associated with Iranian gynecology societies. The questionnaires, returned completely, were included in the study and subjected to statistical analysis.
Results: Of 469 questionnaires sent, 135 were returned. Mean age of the participants was 48±8.9 years. Most had 1-5 years of experience in laparoscopy (N=73), 31 participants had 6-10 years, and 29 participants >10 years. They were graduated from different medical universities in Iran (as a gynecologist); some have passed fellowship programs at medical universities (N=41), 20 at Gynecology Laparoscopy Society, 14 have passed hands-on workshop, and 53 have not passed any course (39.2%). They worked mainly in Tehran (40.74%) and Isfahan (9.6%), Khorasan and Rasht (each city 8.14%). They considered the equipment for laparoscopy was adequate for ovarian cyst (62.2%), hysterectomy (60%) and endometriosis (47.4%).
Conclusion: The limited number of cities where gynecologic laparoscopy is performed highlights the necessity of addressing this issue and completing formal fellowship training programs.
