Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between delivery method and thyroid hormone levels and blood gases in the newborn cord at birth.
Materials and methods: The present study is a analytical study conducted in Shahid Akbarabad Hospital in Tehran, Iran, In this study, 240 single and term pregnant women with no history of thyroid problems were evaluated. Subjects were divided into three groups of natural delivery, emergency cesarean delivery and elective cesarean delivery. Immediately after birth, 5 cc venous blood samples were collected from neonatal cord and on it thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) tests measured, also blood gases including umbilical vein oxygen pressure (PO2), carbon dioxide pressure (PCO2), oxygen saturation (O2saturation) and pH were measured in the laboratory.
Results: Mean TSH level in emergency cesarean section was higher than normal delivery (P = 0.001) and also higher than selective cesarean section (P = 0.034). On the other hand, there was a significant difference between normal delivery and elective cesarean section (P = 0.001). It was also higher than elective cesarean section (P = 0/014, p=0/037). There was no significant difference between the two groups of natural delivery and elective cesarean section (P
