Associated Factors with Striae Gravidarum in Nulliparous Women

Abstract

Introduction: Striae gravidarum is one of the skin changes during pregnancy. According to its high prevalence, indefinite treatment, and also cause of psychological and beauty problems in women is important. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine the associated factor with striae gravidarum.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was implemented on 288 nulliparous healthy women with gestational age of 37 to 40 in year 2011 in Shahid Mostafa Khomeini hospital in Tehran. Using cluster sampling, data were gathered through interview by the researcher. Thestriae gravidarumintensity wasranked by Davey’s score. Data were analyzed by SPSS statistical software version 19, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, and chi-square tests. P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: Frequency of striae gravidarum was 88.5% in this research. Statistically significant correlation was observed between striae gravidarum and mother's age, body mass index, weight gain during pregnancy, abdomen diagonal, infant's weight, family history of striae gravidarum, daily water intake, dairy, fruit and vegetable consumption (p<0.05). But no relationship was found between striae gravidarum and cream usage and daily consumption ofprotein (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Mother's age, body mass index, weight gain during pregnancy, abdomen diagonal, infant's weight, family history of striae gravidarum, daily water intake, dairy, fruit and vegetable consumption affect theseverity of striae gravidarum.
