The Effect of Group Counseling on Infertility Adjustment of infertile women in Tabriz Al-Zahra clinic

Abstract

 
Introduction: About one fifth of couples are infertile and 2 million couples are added to this amount annually. The Variety in the rate of adjustment reflects the interpersonal vulnerabilities that affects the capacity of person cope with a life stressful events such as infertility. The goal of psychological interventions is recognition and the person to more cope with this situation. According to the prevalence of infertility in community and its psychological problems. this study was performed with the aim to determine the effects of group counseling on infertility adjustment.
 
Method: this two grouped randomized controlled trial was performed on 92 infertile women referred to infertility clinic of Tabriz Al-Zahra Hospital from 2013-2014. The infertility psychological adjustment scale was used for evaluation of the rate of individual's adjustment with infertility.  In counseling group, counseling based on guideline of infertility psychology counseling was offered by researcher. Control group received the routine care of the center. The infertility adjustment questionnaire was given to counseling and control groups again after accomplished counseling intervention. For data analysis, SPSS software (version 16) and statistical tests such as paired t test, in depended t test and chi-square were used. p<0/05 was considered significant.
 
Results: the counseling group had a significant decrease in mean score of infertility adjustment (58.39±10.13) compared to the control group (90.63±13.28)(p<0/001). So in counseling group, adjustment to infertility was increased compared to control group.
 
Conclusion: group counseling affects increasing adjustment in infertile woman undergoing IVF or ICSI. So it can be concluded this treatment can be used as a complementary therapy beside medical treatments in infertility centers and be more effective on adjustment of infertile women.
