The Relationship between Marital Satisfaction and Social Support with Maternal Fetal Attachment in Pregnant Women with a History of Baby Loss

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal-fetal attachment considers as a sign of mothers' effectiveness on baby caring and mother-fetal attachment in the post-partum period. This topic is very important in women with a history of baby loss. This study was done aimed to determine the relationship of marital satisfaction and social support with maternal-fetal attachment in pregnant women with a history of baby loss.
Methods: This correlation study was conducted on 180 pregnant women with the history of baby loss who referred to Mashhad health centers, Iran during 2013. Data were collected with Cranley's maternal-fetal attachment, social support and marital satisfaction questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 11.5), one way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient tests. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: The average of maternal-fetal attachment was 64±18.05. There was a direct correlation between marital satisfaction and maternal-fetal attachment (p<0.001) and also between social support and maternal-fetal attachment (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Maternal-fetal attachment increases with increasing social support and marital satisfaction.
