Abstract

Introduction: Cesarean section is one of the most common gynecological surgeries in the world, which is mainly performed using spinal anesthesia. Despite its numerous benefits for the mother and the baby, this anesthesia method is associated with possible complications. Proper awareness and self-care of mothers can prevent the occurrence of these complications. The present study aimed to investigate the level of awareness and self-care of mothers undergoing cesarean section regarding post-spinal anesthesia care at Kamali Hospital, Karaj.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Kamali Hospital from November to January 1403. Participants included 255 mothers undergoing cesarean section with spinal anesthesia who participated in the study using an accessible method and according to the inclusion criteria. The information was assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Data analysis was performed with SPSS version 28 software.

Findings: The mean total awareness score was 7.21, which was at a relatively weak level. The mean self-care score of mothers was 14.32, which was at a relatively good level. There was a positive and significant relationship between awareness and self-care (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Given the low level of awareness of mothers regarding post-spinal care and the effects of these complications on maternal health and reduced quality of infant care, it is recommended that educational and executive managers of educational and therapeutic centers pay attention to post-spinal anesthesia care in patient education programs.
