Abstract

Background and Objectives:

Cupping therapy is a widely practiced method in Persian Medicine, commonly used to improve physical ailments and regulate bodily functions. However, there is limited documentation regarding its therapeutic effects and potential adverse outcomes. This case study aims to investigate the impact of cupping therapy on the natural menstrual cycle.

Case Report:

A 41-year-old woman with a chief complaint of infertility and a history of low ovarian reserve visited a Persian medicine clinic. She underwent lifestyle modifications and complementary treatments, including cupping therapy. Following abdominal and ovarian cupping, the patient experienced a 15-day delay in menstruation. In the subsequent month, after repeated cupping, the menstrual delay extended to two months.

Discussion and Conclusion:

This case study presents the first report of significant menstrual delay following localized cupping therapy. The possible underlying mechanisms may include alterations in pelvic blood flow, effects on the autonomic nervous system, or hormonal changes induced by local stimulation. These findings highlight the need for further research to explore the clinical implications and underlying mechanisms of cupping therapy. Additionally, raising awareness among healthcare professionals and patients about this potential side effect can contribute to better management strategies.
