The frequency of Genital wart Risk Factors and Recurrence in Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Women Referring to Shahid Mofatteh Clinic in Yasuj

Abstract

Introduction: Genital warts are among the most common sexually transmitted infections. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of risk factors and recurrence of this disease in vaccinated and unvaccinated women.

Material and Methods: In this analytical study, 138 women with genital warts who referred to the clinic's gynecological clinic from 2020 to 2023 were selected using a convenient sampling method. Risk factors were collected through interviews, and patients were examined by a gynecologist using a checklist. They were advised to receive the Gardasil vaccine and followed up for vaccine administration and recurrence. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 26 software.

Results: Most of participants 65 (47.1%) were in 26-35 years old, married 111 (84.8%), and had tertiary education 65 (47.1%). Risk factors were: marriage age of 20-29 years 75 (61%), multiple marriage 12 people (9.8%), genital waxing 87 (63%), smoking 38(27.5%), other genital infections 93(67.4%), withdrawal contraception method 72 (66.1%), spouse genital warts infection 48 (39%). The overall recurrence genital warts rate was 23 (16.7%) and the recurrence rate was lower in the vaccinated group than unvaccinated (p=0/11).

Conclusion: The use of unprotected contraceptive methods, relatively young age at marriage, other genital infections, and genital waxing were the highest risk factors. Vaccination has reduced the recurrence rate by almost half.
