Investigating the effect of Persicaria hydropiper vaginal cream on sexual function of postmenopausal women

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted with the aim of Investigating the effect of Persicaria hydropiper vaginal cream on sexual function of postmenopausal women.



Methods: This double-blind clinical trial research was conducted in 1403 on 111 postmenopausal women aged 45-65 years. Patients were randomly divided into three groups: Persicaria hydropiper vaginal cream, placebo and conjugated estrogen. Participant were treated for 12 weeks. The visit was done in week 8, 12 and 4 weeks after the end of the treatment. Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) were used to collect data. The data was analyzed with SPSS version 25 software, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.



Results: The findings showed Female Sexual Function Index of women and its domains increased significantly in the intervention and estrogen group compared to placebo at weeks 8 and 12 (P < 0.0001). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the estrogen and intervention groups (P > 0.05).



Conclusion: Persicaria hydropiper vaginal cream is effective in improving sexual function and its dimensions in menopausal women. Therefore, it can be considered as a non-hormonal alternative treatment for improving sexual dysfunction caused by menopause.
