The effect of biofeedback on the pelvic floor in Iranian women: a systematic review

Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic floor problems are one of the most common problems of Iranian women that affects the quality of life. One of the gynecological and surgical treatments in this disease is biofeedback that has been investigated in Iranian studies, so the aim of this systematic review is to investigate the effect of biofeedback on pelvic floor disorders in Iranian women.

Materials and methods: The search was done in SID, Iranmedex, Irandoc, googlescholar, Magiran, Pubmed, Sciensdirect, Scopus databases without time limitation until 2024. MESH was used to find keywords and the research question was designed based on PICO. Jadad standard criteria was used to evaluate the papers and PRISMA 2009 checklist was used to report the studies.

Results: from 1085 reviewed studies, 12 studies were included in the systematic review. In this review, there were 5 articles in urinary incontinence, 2 studies in vaginismus, 3 articles in sexual function, and 2 articles in pelvic organ prolapse. Most of the studies (41.6%) were in urinary incontinence. Most of the studies (83.3%) were designed in Randomized Control Trial, the duration of interventions in these trials varied from 5 weeks to 15 weeks, all the studies had positive effectiveness.

Conclusion: The results of the available evidence show that biofeedback can be effective in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders, but it is necessary to conduct more studies with a strong methodology to obtain more accurate evidence.
