Abstract

Introduction: Nausea and vomiting are among the common problems during pregnancy. Given the significant impact of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting on personal and social lives of pregnant women, the present study was conducted with aim to evaluate and compare the effects of quince and ginger herbal syrup and acupressure at the K-K9 point on nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.
Methods: This single-blind randomized clinical trial study was conducted in 2022 on 44 pregnant women in Gonabad. Participants were randomly assigned into two groups of quince and ginger syrup and acupressure massage at the K-K9 point. In both groups, the 24-hour Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE-24) questionnaire was completed for three consecutive days before the intervention. Then, the intervention was carried out for four days. After the end of the intervention, the severity of nausea and vomiting was reassessed in both groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 22) and Chi-square, One-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The mean score of nausea and vomitting was not significantly different between the two groups before the intervention (p=0.7), but the mean score of nausea and vomitting after the intervention was significantly lower in the quince and ginger group than the K-K9 group (p=0.03).
Conclusion: In this study, quince and ginger syrup and K-K9 acupressure were effective in reducing nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, but quince and ginger syrup had a greater effect on reducing nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, so both methods are recommended to reduce nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.
