Investigating the Effect of Herbal Medicines on the Treatment of Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Introduction: nausea and vomiting are very common among pregnant women. The aim of this study is investigating the effect of herbal medicines on the treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.



Methodology: To find related articles in the international databases of Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Cochran Library, SID, Magiran, Irandoc, Iranmedex using keywords including: Morning sickness, nausea, vomiting, pregnancy, herbal treatment, herbal medicine, herbal remedy were investigated with Boolean operators AND and OR without time limit and in English and Persian languages. Finally, two researchers independently reviewed the articles to assess their quality and extract their main data.

Findings: 19 articles with a total sample size of 1593 were evaluated. The year of publication of the articles was from 2001 to April 2023, and a placebo control group was used in all of them. Except for one study that was conducted in a cross-sectional manner, the design of the other studies was parallel. In general, the results showed that ginger, lemon, mint, cardamom and the combination of mint and lemon can be effective in reducing the intensity and frequency of morning sickness in most cases.

Conclusion: Effective interventions are needed to reduce Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. Therefore, with extensive training and research related to medicinal plants effective on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, it is possible to improve the annoying symptoms in these people with minimal side effects.
