Abstract

IIntroduction: Postpartum depression (PPT) is a debilitating disease with negative consequences for affected mothers and their children. This study aimed to determine the effect of aromatherapy with Polianthes tuberosa PPT

Material& Methods:

This clinical trial study was conducted during the winter of 2018 on 154 high-risk women for PPT who referred to the prenatal care center. The study subjects were randomly divided into two groups: aroma therapy and control group. In addition to receiving the routine care, the subjects in the intervention group received handmade cream with Polianthes tuberosa extract from the second day to 6 weeks after delivery (every 2 hours) with hand and face massage. furthermore, the research tool was filled in three different times (pregnancy, 2 weeks later and 6 weeks after delivery). The data analysis was done using the statistical methods of t-test, analysis of variance with repeated measure and chi-square. The P level was considered less than 0.05.

Results:

There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic traits. The average score of PPT in the intervention group was significantly reduced compared to the control group two and 6 weeks after delivery (P<0.001).

Conclusion

The aromatherapy Polianthes tuberose relieves the symptoms of PPT. It is an alternative and safe herbal medicine that can be used in high-risk women.
