The frequency of ovarian neoplasms in Urmia Shahid Motahari Hospital, 2015 to 2018

Abstract

Introduction: Ovarian neoplasms are widely diversified in structure and biological behavior. Ovarian tumors are generally divided into three types: benign, borderline, and malignant. Ovarian carcinoma is the sixth most common cancer in women and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women. Its prevalence varies in different parts of the world depending on different risk factors. This study was performed aimed to evaluate the frequency of histopathological types of ovarian neoplasms and the effective factors.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all ovarian samples sent to the pathology ward of Motahari Hospital in Urmia from 2015 to 2018 were examined by counting method. Demographic information and clinical symptoms of patients were extracted from patients' files and types of ovarian lesions were classified according to the classification of the World Health Organization, and their frequency and relationship with demographic information was evaluated. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 17) and Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, Fisher and Chi-square tests. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: From 669 reviewed samples, 480 samples (71.74 %) were neoplastic lesions. Among neoplastic lesions, 273 samples (56.87%) were benign, 198 (41.25%) were malignant and 9 (1.87%) were borderline. The most common type of tumor in terms of histological origin was epithelial lesion. The most common symptom was abdominal pain. The incidence of malignant tumors was lower in those taking contraceptive pills. In lesions with epithelial origin, the number of pregnancies was higher than other individuals.
Conclusion: Malignant lesions are often seen in menopausal and postmenopausal ages, therefore, follow-up of ovarian masses at this age is of particular importance and should be given more importance to this issue in annual examinations.
