Introduction: After pain is one of the complications occurred during postpartum that sometimes requires analgesic to relieve pain. This study was designed to compare the analgesic effects of zintoma and mefenamic acid on after pain during postpartum in multiparous women.
Methods: This single blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on122 multiparous women who had normal vaginal delivery in Mahshahr hospital, Iran in 2013 and suffered from postpartum pain. The pregnant women were randomly divided into two groups of 61 cases in zintoma and 61 cases in mefenamic acid groups. Using the visual analogue scale, after pain was determined during the first 2 hours after delivery and patients received zintoma and mefenamic acid if the pain score was equal or more than 4 was expressed by patients. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 17 and descriptive and inferential statistical. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: 115 mothers (57 women in zintoma group and 58 women in mefenamic acid group) enrolled to the study. Results revealed that mefenamic acid and zintoma both are effective in reducing the duration and severity of postpartum pain and the intensity and duration of pain and pain intensity after intervention in both groups showed no significant differences (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Ginger as a safe herbal remedy without any side effects can use an alternative drug instead of mefenamic acid for women who suffered from postpartum pain.
