Introduction::this study was done with the aim of evaluating pathologic result of stereotactic core needle biopsy to determine the prevalence of malignant and benign lesion and subtype in each groupe in patient with suspicious microcalcifications on mammography based on BIRADS classification.
Method;in this prospective , cross sectional study, 59 consecutive patients who referred to mammographic clinic between April2017-September2019, and underwent sterotactic core biopsy because of the presence of suspiciouse microcalcifications(include morphology and distribution) without mass or focal asymmetry on mammography .in all Patients calcification were identified in at least one core needle specimen after performing specimen mammography.specimens were submitted and referred to pathologic laboratory and analysed by two pathologists together.The total prevalence of benign and malignant lesions and also prevalence of subtypes lesions in each groupe were evaluated.the result of different mammographic appearance of suspiciouse microcalcifications was also compared with pathologic diagnosis.
Result: benign lesions were seen in 71% and malignant lesions in29% of patient in histo pathologic examination. the total prevalence of benign lesion were more than malignant lesions and non prolifereative lesions more than proliferative Lesions.fibrocystic changes was the most common lesion in non proliferative groupe(54%). In malignant groupe,the prevalence of DCIS and ductal carcinoma invasive was 74% and 26% respectively. prevalence of malignancy was more in fine pleomorphic type of microcalcifications than amorphous and coarse heterogeneous types.
Conclusion:according to significant prevalence of malignancy specially the prevalence of DCIS.,sterotactic biopsy can be used as an noninvasive biopsy method for microcalcifications to detect early breast cancer.
