Introduction: Nausea and vomiting is one of the most common and undesirable side effects of cisplatin and due to the effects of ginger in the treatment and prevention of nausea and vomiting, we decided to study the effect of ginger capsule on the prevention of nausea and vomiting. Vomiting in patients receiving cisplatin undergoing mastectomy.
Methods:This randomized double-blind clinical trial study was performed with the participation of 60 patients in the eight months ending August2018 in the chemotherapy clinic of Shahid Madani Hospital(Radiotherapy Center only)in Tabriz.The intervention group received ginger 500 mg twice daily10 days after chemotherapy and one week before mastectomy; the control group received placebo.Rhodes nausea and vomiting instrument was used before the intervention and the day after mastectomy.Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk and t-test in SPSS21 software with significance level less than0.05.
Results: The intra-group comparison of nausea severity indicated that the control group had no statistical difference after the intervention(P=0.119), whereas in the intervention group, a significant difference was observed after the intervention (P=0.001); There was no significant change in vomiting severity in the control group (P=0.229), while this score was significantly decreased in the intervention group (P=0.004).
Conclusion: Ginger capsules are effective in preventing nausea and vomiting in women who have been on cisplatin and who may soon undergo mastectomy.
